Garlic is one of the oldest feed additives in pigeon sports. Many breeders have been adding it to feed for generations, especially during the flying season and in autumn. This tradition is why garlic powder can be found in almost every pigeon loft — regardless of what each individual keeper expects from it.
This text explains what is contained in garlic powder, how it is dosed, and what practical points to consider when using it. You will not find claims about any health effects here on purpose: feed materials may not promise an effect on diseases or bodily functions under Regulation (EC) No. 767/2009, and we follow that.
Composition and analytical constituents
Eurital garlic powder consists of 100% pure garlic, finely ground. It contains no additives, no carriers, and no extenders. Under feed law, this makes it a single feed material — a single, unmixed raw material.

- Crude protein 16.7 %
- Crude fiber 3.1 %
- Crude ash 3.4 %
- Crude fat 0.9 %
The low fat content and comparatively high protein content are typical for a spice powder. Since the amount fed is only a few grams, its contribution to the overall ration is mathematically irrelevant — garlic powder is not fed as a source of nutrients, but as a flavoring and traditional additive.
Dosage
The feeding recommendation is 5 g garlic powder per 1 kg feed. That is about one level teaspoon per kilogram.
More is not better. Garlic has a strong flavor, and too high a dosage in practice makes pigeons accept the feed less readily. Anyone starting out should begin with half the amount and increase it slowly until the birds continue to take the feed well as usual.
Use: how to make the powder stick
The most common practical problem is simple: dry powder slides off the smooth grain and collects at the bottom of the feed bucket. The pigeons then eat the grain and leave the powder behind.
The solution is a binding agent. The feed is lightly moistened with a feed oil, then the powder is mixed in. This helps it stick to the grain and ensures it is eaten along with it. The important part is lightly — wet feed clumps together and quickly becomes unappetizing in warm weather.
Practical steps:
- Put the daily feed portion into a bucket
- add a few milliliters of oil, mix well until the grain has a dull sheen
- add garlic powder and mix again
- prepare only as much as will be fed on the same day
When is garlic fed?
Two time windows are common in pigeon sports:
The flying season. Here, garlic is given alongside racing feed, usually on fixed days of the week rather than daily.
Autumn. To prepare for winter, regular feeding is common, often over several weeks.
Whether it is fed continuously or in intervals varies from breeder to breeder. There is no universally valid rule.
Storage
Garlic powder absorbs moisture and then clumps together. It should be stored dry, dark, and sealed — ideally in its original container. Once clumped, it can still be crushed, but it doses much less accurately.
The smell transfers to nearby supplies. Anyone storing feed materials in the same room is better off keeping garlic powder separate.
What garlic powder is not
Three distinctions so there are no false expectations:
Not a medicine and not a substitute for veterinary treatment. For sick animals, a veterinarian should be consulted. A feed additive is neither intended nor suitable for that purpose.
Not a remedy against parasites. For the treatment of mites or other parasites, there are approved products. Garlic powder is a feed material and does not have such approval.
Not a compensation for feeding mistakes. The basis remains a suitable basic ration, clean drinking water, and a dry, clean loft.
