Electrolytes (17)
Electrolytes replace what is lost under heavy exertion: after a long flight, on hot days, after transport in the basket, and especially in cases of diarrhea, the pigeon loses not only water but also sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and magnesium through breathing and droppings. These salts regulate fluid balance, muscle function, and nerve signal transmission — if they are lacking, the bird drinks without truly recovering.
That is why electrolyte powder is added to the drinking water, usually with sugar or dextrose as a carrier: glucose supports the absorption of the salts in the intestine. In addition to pure electrolyte products, you will also find amino acid and vitamin combinations for recovery here — as powder to mix or liquid for the drinking water, from Röhnfried, Beyers, Vanrobaeys, Oropharma, Aviform and Eurital.
When electrolytes make sense: immediately after returning home from a flight, during hot spells, after transport and shows, with watery droppings, and during the recovery phase of young pigeons. Always give the prepared solution fresh and dose it according to the manufacturer’s instructions — more is not better here, because an excess of salts disrupts fluid balance just as much as a deficiency.
Why fluid and electrolyte supply is especially decisive for young birds is explained in the guide Young Bird Disease. Also relevant: Intact intestinal flora, Recovery & stress, and Drinking water hygiene — because electrolytes only work in clean drinking water.
Supplementary feed is used to provide nutrients and electrolytes. They are not medicines; if diarrhea persists or signs of illness appear in the flock, consult a veterinarian.
