Why grit should not simply be placed on the floor

Pigeons and pet birds do not have teeth. They take in small stones, which grind the grains in the gizzard – without grit, digestion suffers. At the same time, grit covers part of the calcium requirement needed for strong bones and firm eggshells.

Hygiene is crucial here: grit left exposed in the loft gets contaminated with droppings, attracts moisture, and clumps together. It is then less readily accepted and can become a source of germs. A grit box keeps the supply in one fixed place, clean and dry.

Application tips

• Offer grit for free access at all times – the need varies depending on the breeding, racing, and moulting phase.
• Mount the box so the birds cannot defecate into it.
• Replace leftovers regularly and wash out the box each time the loft is cleaned.
• During breeding and moulting, check the fill level more often – mineral needs increase significantly then.
