Caring for Budgerigars: Cage, Food, and Lifespan
Wellensittiches are considered undemanding. That is true when it comes to food and care - but not at all when it comes to two other points: companionship and space. That is exactly where most mistakes happen.
Never keep individually
Wellensittiche are flock birds. In the wild, they live in groups of hundreds and are never alone. A budgie kept on its own is not a tamer bird, but an isolated one.
The human cannot replace a fellow bird—they’re not there during the day, they don’t speak budgie language, and they don’t sleep on the same perch at night. At least two animals are essential, preferably a small group. A mirror is explicitly no substitute: the bird feeds its reflection and never gets a response.
Cage Size and Free Flight
Budgerigars fly horizontally, not vertically. A tall, narrow cage is of little use to them – Length is more important than height. A minimum length of around 100 cm applies for one pair; more is always better.
Equally important: daily free flight, several hours. A cage, no matter how large, does not replace flying. Before free flight, close windows, cover mirrors, cover pots, and keep other pets out.
The cage location should be bright and free from drafts, against a wall rather than out in the open, and not in the kitchen - fumes from coated pans are dangerous for birds.
The furnishings
- Natural branches instead of plastic rods. Equally round plastic perches put pressure on the feet in the same spot every time. Branches of varying diameter—such as unsprayed fruit tree, willow, or hazel—help prevent this and are also popular for chewing.
- Bowls for food and water, freestanding or suspended. You can find suitable options under Accessories for cages and aviaries.
- Bird sand on the bottom of the cage – it contains the grit that the birds ingest for digestion.
- A bathhouse or a shallow bowl – most budgies enjoy bathing.

Lining
The basis is a Seed mix from various millet varieties, canary seed, and a small proportion of oilseeds. A mixture with too high a proportion of oilseeds quickly makes the animals overweight – budgerigars preferentially pick out the high-fat seeds. Our range: Budgie food.
Millet spray The classic treat on the cob. It keeps birds occupied, but is high in energy – as a reward, not a constant offering. Available in red and yellow under Snacks for Ornamental Birds.
Fresh food daily: lettuce leaves, cucumber, bell pepper, carrot greens, chickweed, dandelion. Introduce new foods slowly – some birds need weeks before they recognize greens as food.
Sprouted feed is especially popular during molting and rearing. Important: feed only if properly sprouted and remove leftovers after a few hours, because sprouts spoil quickly.
What budgies must not be given
- Toxic to birds – avocado
- Chocolate, coffee, alcohol
- Salted, Seasoned, Fried
- Dairy products
- Stone fruit pits
- Parsley in larger quantities
The moult
Budgerigars shed their plumage about twice a year. During this time, the birds are quieter, fluff up more often, and feathers can be found on the bottom of the cage – this is normal. Anyone who also offers fresh food and sprouted food during these weeks is meeting their increased needs.
If, on the other hand, feathers keep falling out permanently, bald patches develop, or the bird plucks itself, it is no longer molting. In that case, an avian veterinarian should be consulted.
How old do budgerigars get?
With good posture, budgerigars reach twelve to fifteen years, occasionally more. Significantly shorter lifespans are usually associated with a lack of exercise, a permanently overly fatty diet, or being kept alone.
A budgie is therefore not a short-term pet — you should think of getting one, as with a cat, as a commitment for more than a decade.

Can a budgie be kept alone?

Because they have the same diameter everywhere and the feet always bear weight in the same spot. Natural branches are irregular, are great for chewing on, and help prevent pressure sores.
