Caring for Budgerigars: Cage, Food, and Lifespan
Why budgies should never be kept alone, how long a cage they need and what it should contain, what belongs in their food, and what helps them live to be twelve to fifteen years old.
Budgerigars are considered undemanding. That’s true when it comes to food and care – but not at all in two other respects: companionship and space. That’s exactly where most mistakes are made.
Do not keep alone
Wellensittiche are flock birds. In the wild, they live in groups of hundreds and are never alone. A budgerigar kept on its own is not a tamer bird, but an isolated one.
The human cannot replace a fellow budgie — they are not there during the day, do not speak budgie language, and do not sleep on the same perch at night. At least two animals are essential; a small group is better. A mirror is explicitly not a substitute: The bird feeds its reflection and never gets a response.
Cage Size and Free Flight
Budgies fly horizontally, not vertically. A tall, narrow cage is of little use to them – Length is more important than height. Around 100 cm in length is considered the minimum for a pair; longer is always better.
Equally important: daily free flight, several hours. A cage, no matter how large it is, does not replace flying. Before free flight, close windows, cover mirrors, cover pots, and keep other pets out.
The cage location should be bright and free from drafts, against a wall rather than out in the room, and not in the kitchen—fumes from coated pans are dangerous for birds.
The furnishings
- Natural branches instead of plastic rods. Evenly round plastic perches always put pressure on the feet in the same spot. Branches with varying diameters—such as unsprayed fruit tree, willow, or hazel—help prevent this and are gladly chewed on.
- Bowls for food and water, freestanding or suspended. You can find suitable options under Accessories for cages and aviaries.
- Bird sand on the cage floor – it contains the grit that birds ingest for digestion. From the own brand, there is Eurital Bird Sand with Lime and Anise.
- A bathhouse or a shallow bowl – most budgies enjoy bathing.
- Lime and mineral stone for chewing, see Grit & Minerals for Ornamental Birds.
A Grit box with a capacity of around two liters for the clean and dry spread of grit as well as the hard-baked Orlux Mineral Block 400 g for gnawing. Additional additives are listed under Feed additives for ornamental birds.
Lining
The basis is a Seed mix made from various types of millet, canary seed, and a small proportion of oilseeds. A mix with too high a proportion of oilseeds quickly makes the animals overweight – budgerigars preferentially pick out the high-fat seeds. Our range: Budgie food.
As a ready-made base mix, about the Deli Nature No. 51 Budgerigar Basic Feed available in 20-kg packs; suitable for mixing in individual seeds Yellow millet 2,5 kg.
Spray millet on the cob is the classic treat. It keeps birds occupied, but is energy-rich – as a reward, not a permanent offering. Available in red and yellow at Snacks for pet birds.
Among the assortment are, among other things, red French millet spray 2 kg and yellow French millet spray 1 kg.
Fresh food daily: lettuce leaves, cucumber, bell pepper, carrot tops, chickweed, dandelion. Introduce new foods slowly – some birds need weeks before they recognize greens as food.
Sprouted feed is especially popular during moulting and breeding. Important: only feed it properly sprouted and remove leftovers after a few hours, because sprouts spoil quickly.
Ready-made germination seed for parakeets and exotics is available with the Prestige Sprouting Feed for Parakeets & Exotic Birds; related blends can be found under Exotic pet food.
What budgerigars must not be given
- Avocado – toxic to birds

- Salted, Spiced, Fried
- Dairy products
- Pits from stone fruit
- Parsley in larger quantities
The Mauser
Approximately twice a year, budgerigars change their plumage. During this time, the birds are quieter, fluff up more often, and there are feathers on the bottom of the cage – this is normal. Anyone who also offers fresh food and sprouted food during these weeks is meeting their increased needs. Traditionally, birds that are moulting are also Flowers of sulfur completed; the dosage for each animal species is listed in the guide Sulfur Blossom: Use and Dosage.
However, if feathers are permanently falling out, bald patches appear, or the bird is plucking itself, then it is no longer molting. In that case, an avian veterinarian should be consulted.
How old do budgerigars get?
With good posture, budgerigars achieve twelve to fifteen years, occasionally longer. Significantly shorter lifespans are usually associated with lack of exercise, a permanently too high-fat diet, or being kept alone.
A budgie is therefore not a short-term pet – you should think of getting one as a commitment spanning more than a decade, just like with a cat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a budgie be kept alone?
No. Budgerigars are flock birds and need at least one companion of their own species. A mirror or a human cannot replace that.
How big does the cage need to be?
For a pair, at least about 100 cm in length, with length being more important than height – budgies fly horizontally. Daily free flight is still necessary.
What do budgerigars eat?
A seed mix of millet and canary seed as a base, plus fresh food daily and occasional millet sprays or sprouted seed.
How old do budgerigars get?
Twelve to fifteen years is realistic with good care.
Why is my budgerigar losing feathers?
Usually it is the normal molt, which occurs twice a year. Bare patches, permanent feather loss, or feather plucking, on the other hand, are a case for an avian veterinarian.
Why no plastic rods?
Because they have the same diameter everywhere and always put pressure on the feet in the same spot. Natural branches are irregular, are often chewed on, and help prevent pressure sores.
